DON CAMPBELL ON THE ICE BREAKER MACKINAW

DON CAMPBELL ON THE ICE BREAKER MACKINAW

BOATNERD- Many of you know I am a little bit of a boat nerd too. Deb and I have camped at the Soo Locks for over 25 years. Before that we stayed in the Ojibaway Hotel that overlooked the Soo Locks. We have a lifetime of memories watching the freighters too.
With less than 30 days until the Soo Locks open again for the 2007 Shipping Season I had to post a shipping picture.
Deb was up in the bridge of the IceBreaker Mackinaw when she took this picture of me watching the Coasty’s as we headed out towards the Straits of Mackinaw to open the shipping lanes. You can see the track in the ice from the previous trip the icebreaker took and that refroze.
People used to ask us how we got to ride the Mackinaw 6 times. I told them that Nicole dated the Captains son for about one year. So I want to thank Nicole too for these fun memories, ha,ha.
TWELVE INCH SNOWSTORM HEADING OUR WAY- The weatherman is saying 6 to 12 inches of snow for our area for tomorrow. Maybe we will get the full 12″, oh yea!! ha,ha. There are some people who do not like the big snowstorms, but I am not one of them. If it’s winter, we need a good snowstorm at least once a week. (:>).
KOMATSU 575A SUPER DOZER MODEL- I got the second track frame done and now I am working on the sprockets and main frame so I can attach the track frames to it. I should get that all done this afternoon . Then I will start cutting out the 180 plus track pad and grouser parts.
LONGVIEW , TEXAS- I have mentioned we are going to take a new adventure in a few weeks to see some big machinery.
We are going to Longview to the LeTourneau Factory. We were invited to come down a couple years ago when the second L-2350 Loader was built, but we were unable to go .
There are only two 54 yard bucket monsterLeTourneau L-2350 loaders in the world.
Well, that is going to change in the next several weeks to THREE MONSTER L-2350 Loaders. And it looks like it will work out we can make the trip down to see it. I have two friends that work there. So we will get a personal tour from them and they will also probably take Deb and I out for some real Texas BEST BARBECUE RIBS !!!!, LOL.
No, not really, actually, I will treat them to the ribs!! for their kindness.
We will probably also take them to the mall for a shopping Spree !!! LOL . Hey Butch and Dale!, we are counting the days to see that monster loader!! Well, I am counting the days, I’m not so sure Deb is, ha,ha,

Here is another cool night-time picture Larry gave me. It says a lot about Larry and how much fun taking his camera with him to work was. Most people working 12 hour days in the mines probably don’t want to take many pictures to look at when they get home. They want a break from the coal mines. Getting rare pics like this one and knowing who is in the machine is even cooler. Thanks again Larry for this neat picture.
KOMATSU 575A SUPER DOZER MODEL- I am working on the second track frame and could get it done by tomorrow morning. Then i will get going on the track pads.
THIRTY DEGREES here in Gaylord today, very mild and it seems pretty nice going outside and not feeling 5 degrees.
TEXAS BARBECUE- In a few weeks we hope to head to Texas on a new adventure. I have always heard Texas has the best barbecued ribs. I love ribs, but have never had slow cooked overnight type ribs that they talk about. We will be going by Memphis too and they say a place called Jim Neely’s Interstate BBQ also has the best slow cooked ribs. We also looked up Corky’s Ribs and Rendevous Ribs. So along with seeing some cool machines , I hope to taste some of the countries best , slow cooked ribs. (:>)
Big Machinery, and BarBeCue Ribs and driving across country with by best gal beside me , it don’t get no better than that, LOL!

SUPER DOZER- Here is another cool picture Larry sent me last week of him taking a short break in the West Virginia Coal Mines. It would be quite a thrill to feel that kind of power under you pushing that kind of a load with that monster blade. Larry said he always took lots of pictures as he loves the big machines too.
Along with Larry’s help , I want to thank James and Kevin Kenny for sending me info on the Super Dozer a while back.
I also want to thank all of you who continue to try to help me with info on many future projects.
FIVE INCHES OF NEW SNOW THIS MORNING- I was up at 3:00 a.m. today because I knew before we went to bed last night we had received 3 inches of snow. We only got 2 more inches overnight , but 5 inches was perfect for plowing. Many other areas got a beautiful 8 to 12 inches. We weren’t that lucky. I get the same amount of money for all my customers if we get 4inches or 20 inches. It’s just fun to run the big blower once or twice a year with a really nice amount of snow over 10inches.
KOMATSU SUPER DOZER- I will work on the second track frame this afternoon.
NEW CRAFTSMAN AIR COMPRESSOR- I have a 5 hp, 60 gallon air compressor , but don’t use it during the winter months. My small under the bench compressor quit on me today. So I just got back from Sears and bought a new 1.5 hp compressor for under the workbench. I have had very good luck with Craftsman tools over the years so we’ll see how this little one works out .
MACKINAW PASTIES- Deb and I rode up to Mackinaw yesterday and ate at our favorite Pasty Place. A pasty is like a meat pie with a very thin crunchy crust. umm, good! On the way home the weather turned real bad, white out conditions , and heavy snow squalls but we had a fun afternoon and made it home safe.

SUNDAY MESSAGE- Slowing down and enjoy today;
In our need to always try to get more done, we tend to overschedule everything. Then we find ourselves behind all the time , we hop in the car and speed hear and there . We hurry to get the kids to bed to get a little break and realize another hectic day is finally over. We forget that when today is over, we will never get it back . We forget that each day done is closer to our last day on earth.
As I get older , I find myself appreciating even the days I spend in my workshop. I used to work for the weekends and try to hurry the days in between . Now I finally think I got it and do realize how special everyday really is.
Deb’s weeks are pretty hectic with 6 pre-schoolers and it’s hard for her to relax until the last one is gone at 5:00. So on the weekends we have always set aside for nice relaxing rides in the car and us just talking for hours as we ride to our favorite places. This picture of Deb and I was one of those great weekends we had enjoying our relaxing time together. I still have so much fun with Deb everyday.
IF YOUR WORKING HARD TO MAKE A LIVING
NEVER TAKING TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES
NOW IT’S TIME TO PICK UP THE BIBLE
AND FIND TRUE JOY BEFORE TODAY CLOSES
( COME APART AND REST A WHILE OR YOU MAY JUST PLAIN COME APART)
Have a nice Sunday with the ones you love
